Susan Milan is one of the UK's leading flutists, and a highly respected teacher. A Scholar at the Royal College of Music in London, she was immediately appointed Principal Flute and the first woman member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
After leaving the RPO, she rapidly emerged as an international soloist and now regularly performs with major orchestras in Britain and Europe. She has toured extensively throughout Europe, Scandinavia, USA, Hong Kong and the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe. She has commissioned and premiered several works by well known contemporary composers, including Jindrich Feld, Richard Rodney Bennett, Robert Saxton, Ole Schmidt, Carl Davis, John Rushby Smith, and Robert Simpson.
Ms Milan has a long established recital duo with pianist Ian Brown, and has formed three ensembles: the London Sonata Group, the Instrumental Quintet of London, and the Debussy Trio. She broadcasts frequently for the BBC, and has now recorded most of the mainstream concerto, recital, and chamber music repertoire.
She is dedicated to the encouragement of young players, and in 1991 was appointed Chairman of the British Flute Society. She is a Professor at the Royal College of Music, and runs two master class courses year year in the UK.
Susan enjoys a relaxed home life with her husband, William, two young sons, and two black cats.
