
Shaul Ben-Meir, former flutist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Renaissance Woodwind Quintet, appears regularly in solo recitals and masterclasses across the United States.
Founder and director of the Michigan Flute Orchestra, Ben-Meir was invited to conduct the National Flute Association's Professional Flute Choir at the conventions in Washington, D.C., and New York City, and in May 1997, he conducted the American Flute Orchestra on its tour of France. He has performed at the NFA conventions in Atlanta, San Francisco, and Boston, and served as a judge for the Young Artist Competition, and the Orchestral Competitions, in 1980 Ben-Meir has contributed to enlarging the flute orchestra repertoire by arranging and adapting many symphonic works for that ensemble, which are being performed by flute orchestras around the world.
Shaul Ben-Meir has studied both in his native Israel, and in England. His teachers include Geoffrey Gilbert, Joseph Mariano, and Jean-Pierre Rampal. At the age of 21, he was awarded the Silver Medal at the International Wind Instruments Competition in Helsinki, Finland. He was principal flutist of the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Sergiu Comissiona,when he was invited to the U.S. as a Visiting Professor of Music at Ithaca College, and later was Artist-in-Residence at the University of Buffalo where he worked with Lucas Foss. He has also recorded solo albums with Golden Crest, Coronet, and Megido Records.
