Kathryn Thomas

Born in 1973, British flutist Kathryn Thomas received her musical training at the Purcell School, St. Paul's Girl's School, and the Royal Academy of Music. Her teachers include Sebastian Bell, Susan Milan, John Francis, and Keith Bragg. Since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 1995, Thomas has been rapidly developing a reputation as a versatile musician, and as one of Britain's leading exponents of the contemporary flute repertoire. She regularly appears as a recitalist and chamber musician, recent appearances including the Chichester, Fishguard, and Newbury Spring Festivals. Her concerto performances have ranged from Bach to Arnold, and she has toured abroad, both as a soloist and orchestral musician, including tours of France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Greece.

Thomas has given several world premieres, including The Fruit of Glory by Byrchmore, Music on the Wind by Williams, and the European premiere of Elliot Schwartz'sSonata for Flute and Piano.. She is also a member of the Galliard Ensemble (Wind Quintet), founded when its members were students at the RAM. The quintet is committed to bringing classical music to new audiences, and has performed at many festivals, including the RAM Film Music, Ligeti Festival, and the Chichester Festival. Current projects include establishing a prize to encourage composition for wind quintet.
